When supply breaks

An excerpt from Chapter 3, Supplier Qualification and Management.

Supply disruptions are not a question of if, they are a question of when. The question is whether you have a framework to respond before the disruption stops your production line.

The best response is not panic. It is a four-step discipline: assess the scope, triage by risk, identify options, and execute with ownership. Run tracks in parallel — qualify an alternate part, negotiate with the supplier on a hard deadline, and prepare a design workaround as insurance. By day seven, commit to a mitigation path and update leadership daily.

The programs that survive supply disruptions are the ones that had a plan before the disruption arrived.

Why I wrote this

Thirty years ago I walked onto the production floor of a large electronics facility in Puerto Rico as a young electrical engineer. I had a degree, some theory, and almost no practical knowledge of what it actually took to build hardware at scale.

Since then I have built failure analysis labs from scratch, set up production lines in China and Taiwan, managed contract manufacturers in Thailand and Southeast Asia, launched products for startups that had never built anything before, and run concurrent AI rack programs across three continents.

This book is what I wished I had when I started. I wrote it because no one handed me a playbook either.
